About Weatherisation
It’s a fact: It Works!
Weatherisation services are cost-effective energy efficient measures for existing residential and commercial buildings. Under this definition it includes a wide variety of energy efficient measures that encompass the buildings envelope, its heating and cooling systems, its electrical systems and electricity consuming appliances.
Only the most cost effective measures are included in the upgrade package. The constant pressure for low cost energy savings has become the trademark of weatherisation and distinguishes it from the larger retrofit industries.
Another distinguishing feature of weatherisation is attention to all- round safety checks. Many buildings receiving attention are old and in need of repair. Our programme checks the major energy systems to ensure occupant safety. Weatherisation is a system under the concept of ‘whole-building weatherisation’ and all buildings are looked upon as one complete entity.
Weatherisation comprises of a comprehensive series of energy efficient measures that are based on sophisticated analysis of individual buildings. These analyses take the whole-building approach, which maximises energy and pound savings. Because of this rigorous approach and analyses backing it up, weatherisation has become the leader in advancing building energy science.
Not only does weatherisation address energy saving matters but it also addresses health and safety issues within the building. The issues include carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion of fuel in old boilers, water heaters, indoor air quality problems, mould, and attics exposed to moisture and fire hazards from outdated electrical equipment and wiring.
Through this programme, we install energy efficient measures into buildings. These are not expensive upgrades, but are very effective. Energy savings pay for the upgrades within a few years. The savings are documented and compared against cost. So that over a period of years the efficiency of these measures can be determined.
In the 3 decades since its founding in the USA in 1976, the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Weatherization assistance Programme has provided weatherization services to more than 6.2million families. It has benefitted the US nation by reducing it energy dependency, improving the environment, and stimulating economic development in communities and substantially reducing energy bills by an average of 32% per household.
